The region where Laura´s family lives is very high (around 11,000 feet), very dry (sporadic rain for 2 months of the year), very sunny, and has rock and shale gravel for topsoil. Some very hardy grasses and several species of cactus are the only vegetation that can survive in these very harsh conditions. Here is me in front of one of the larger cactus (but not the largest that we saw).
