A closeup of the rainbow cactus.

This pic doesn´t show it really well, but the needles of this cactus have rows of alternating colors, like a rainbow.

Our trip started with a 4 hour bus ride up the Sama mountain range and deep into the Altiplano. The bus dropped us off in the middle of nowhere, and we hiked 3 hours through rolling terrain of cactus and thola to arrive in Huarmachi.

The region where Laura´s family lives is very high (around 11,000 feet), very dry (sporadic rain for 2 months of the year), very sunny, and has rock and shale gravel for topsoil. Some very hardy grasses and several species of cactus are the only vegetation that can survive in these very harsh conditions. Here is me in front of one of the larger cactus (but not the largest that we saw).

The "horca del Inca", on a hilltop outside of Copacabana, was constructed by ancient Incans as a sort of seasonal clock. When the day of spring that the morning sun shined through this rock gate arrived, they knew conditions were right to plant their crops.

Lazy bums - like mother like daughter.

In the midst of the Isla del Sol ruins, there still exists this ancient little spring-house, which protects a deposit of water fed by a sacred spring, traditionally believed to be a source of eternal youth.

Evers´ favorite thing at the Columbus zoo was a huge, sweet, sticky sucker that lasted him all day. He graciously took it out of his mouth long enough for me to take this picture. Or did Jane have to forcefully take it from him?

The famous Kon-Tiki was modeled after boats used in Lake Titicaca, and a replica of the Kon-Tiki is on display on the shores of Isla del Sol.

Because of the hordes of tourists on Isla del Sol, we sporadically came upon locals vending their handwork. These kids were very interested in having their picture taken, and wouldn´t let us pass until we snapped a photo.
